Dressing children 1940s style can be done cheaply and easily but please do not buy Amazon fancy dress costumes, these are expensive and inaccurate on so many levels. Please see original photos below for ideas.
Girls
Flowery dresses (above the knee)
Skirt and blouse
Cardigan
Short ankle socks (long socks were only worn at the start of the war)
Beret if you want to wear a hat.
Short hair or shoulder length was the fashion
Plaits for long hair (not pony tails or worn loose)
No trainers, school shoes are good
A school skirt would be okay, dresses can be found in charity shops.
Definitely no trousers or leggings
Boys
Shorts (knee length – long trousers were only worn from the age of 14)
Shirt
Tank top or jumper
Blazer or jacket
Long socks
No trainers, school shoes are good
Boys generally did not wear caps
Trousers found in charity shops can be cut down to make into shorts.
This was an era of make do and mend so children do not have to look perfect.
